How to make Microsoft PowerPoint work in your presentation's favor
October 19, 2005
By: Bob Whitehead
Microsoft PowerPoint functions as an important part of
meetings, presentations, and with increasing frequency,
online web conferencing. PowerPoint is intended to help your
audience and/or colleagues understand and digest information
better as well as keep them more engaged. Presentations with
PowerPoint can go wrong, though, and it's important to know
how to prevent your slides from hindering your presentation.
A good slide in a PowerPoint presentation is eye-catching
without distracting from the information being presented
orally. The slide accentuates your point or allows those
listening to your presentation to visualize it better. In
essence, a slide that emphasizes rather than actually makes
the point is preferred. Images and graphics are a great
touch because they allow your information to be understood
and conceptualized in a different way.
What should you look out for when creating slides for a
PowerPoint presentation? Be aware of colors -- you want to
invite viewers of your slides to read, not detract them from
it. Gold or white text on a blue background is readable, for
instance. Choose carefully what information you choose to
put on the slides -- you don't want it to be your speech
verbatim, nor do you want to cover information you yourself
will not touch on.
Whether you're conferencing online or in a physical
conference room, PowerPoint presentations require a person
to be able to think on their feet. Your colleagues may ask
questions that deal with points you plan to make later on. A
PowerPoint tutorial, such as the ones from
Computer Technical Tutorials, may help you feel more at
ease in maneuvering from slide to slide if you need or want
to go out of order.
