Getting the most from your online presentations and meetings

Assembling online to discuss projects, sales strategies, or to present ideas is an effective and convenient way to accomplish tasks. However, if you are new to this method of communication, chances are you want to know how it differs from regular presentations. There are some tips you should keep in mind in order to have effective online presentations and meetings.

The last thing you want is for your online presentation to go over poorly because you were too overwhelmed by the features that web based conferencing technology affords you. Avoid this trap by striving for simplicity -- use only the amenities that you need instead of getting tempted to use something like application sharing or virtual white boarding just because it is available.

When using PowerPoint, once again it is wise keep the rule of simplicity in mind. Eye-catching, yet not overly flashy graphics are the way to go. Becoming familiar with the format of your conferencing interface can make it easier to switch slides.

Make good use of your and your audience's time by getting feedback and encouraging input as needed, just as you would in a standard conference room. This will ensure that you delivered your points effectively.

Take the time to read tips for meeting facilitators or moderators. The flow of the event is under your control. The visuals you provide and the interaction level sets the tone for the meeting. Microsoft offers some excellent training resources for online presenters.

Finally, don't forget to follow up. A participant may think of a question after the meeting has ended or could need a copy of some of the information shared.
