When to choose Internet conferencing over other methods of technological communication
November 13, 2005

In upgrading your company's ability to communicate and
interact in an immediate, ad hoc way, there are a few
choices available to you. You can elect to start using a
teleconferencing service, or consider a more elaborate
room-based video conferencing solution, or you can choose
Internet conferencing (also know as web conferencing). But
how do you know when to choose web conferencing over the
telephone and video options?
Teleconferencing is ideal when you have a smaller group
of people whose discussions are based more around ideas than
a document or project. If your needs are more project
management or application based, this may not be the best
solution for you. However, when the ability to talk on the
phone is the most important part, teleconferencing is the
better choice over online conferencing.
Room-based video conferencing is less common because it
is more costly and requires more complex equipment. But when
your location is stable and the need to have two-way visual
and audio communication is important enough to warrant the
investment, this is a good option. If text-based chat or
VoIP voice communications are sufficient, and locations
often change, then web conferencing may be the better
choice.
Web conferencing is a good medium between
teleconferencing and setting up a video conferencing
facility. You get more features and tools, like co-browsing,
whiteboards, and application sharing, but without investing
in anything more than software licensing or service usage
fees. There's no capital equipment to deal with, either.
Also, if high quality video communications is not your most
needed feature, some of these solutions also offer IP-based
video conferencing as well.
Using web based conferencing technologies allows you to
be spontaneous and meet with a large or small group of
people, no matter where you are. Collaboration is easy,
efficient and powerful when conducted through a web
conference.
