Conferencing online versus face-to-face meetings

It's been said that a web conference cannot replace face-to-face communication, but that does not mean that web conferencing doesn't come with its own set of advantages. In determining which type of interaction is best for your needs, it's helpful to examine the pros and cons of both in-person meetings and conferencing online.

An in-person meeting is more of a two-way street. With online web conferencing, you can send text messages and one-way audio. However, you miss the nuances of a person's expression, tone, and body language with this form of communication. Additionally, when you meet in-person, it's a less distracting setting, as people are removed from the distractions that their offices hold.

However, if you, your colleagues or audience are spread out and have to fly or drive long distances to meet, web conferencing can help alleviate the cost of this burden. In a sales setting, this can help you reach a larger client or customer base because distance matters less.

Unlike an in-person conference, web-based meetings are easy to save and store online. This means participants can review material easily and you can analyze how the presentation went in order to make adjustments.

Learning to use the technology online conferencing affords can be daunting, and not all users are comfortable with it. However, web conferencing can be an extremely powerful and efficient means of global communication once you're familiar with tool you are working with. When you want the flexibility to hold a meeting on ad hoc basis while sharing documents and having a varied number of participants, web conferencing is a great choice.
