Online distance education becomes more interactive with video and web conferencing
November 30, 2005

Online distance education has evolved into an extremely
convenient way for adults to further their education and
skills training. This form of learning allows you to study
at your own pace, which makes it ideal for people with jobs
and other responsibilities. Despite this, some people may be
tentative to engage in this style of education because they
fear it may not be interactive enough.
However, advancements made in conferencing through a
computer via a video or web conferencing application have
made distance education online a much more interactive
experience. Learning online doesn't have to be a solitary
experience. Even if you're studying remotely, you can learn
on the web in a classroom setting with an instructor and
other classmates.
While distance education is traditionally associated with
continuing education courses or online university classes,
the addition of video and web conferencing technology has
further implications. A class that uses features like real
time text chat and the ability to give a presentation can be
beneficial to home schooled children in grades K-12, as they
can interact with other students.
Learning online doesn't have to mean sacrificing getting
to know the instructor or fellow students. As web
conferencing becomes more prominent, it's easier to find
solutions to integrate into distance education programs.
With a web conferencing format, you can ask questions in
real time, build relationships, and experiment with
different learning techniques -- such as aural versus visual
-- in order to gain a better grasp on the material. These
integrations can make your experience more dynamic and more
beneficial.
