Free P2P file sharing programs, networks & legal issues

You can do a lot with a high-speed Internet connection. One very popular activity that a fast connection makes easy is downloading copyrighted music, movies, and television shows using free P2P file sharing programs over public networks. The fact of the matter remains, however, that sharing this type of material is illegal.

Movie tickets are expensive. It's boring to sit through commercials. Musical acts often put out CDs that have only one or two hits. Free peer to peer file sharing programs make life easier for those who don't have a big entertainment budget. There are plenty of reasons people cite for engaging in file sharing, and many are legitimate. However, those who are losing royalties to free downloads view the situation differently.

It's understandably difficult for some to think about the ethical implications behind copyright violation, considering top music artist salaries vary greatly from the average citizen. The legal issues, however, cannot be ignored.

The RIAA is filing lawsuits against those who are violating copyrights through file sharing. The default setting on many file sharing programs allows for uploading, which is what many of those being sued are being sued for.

According to Reuters, legal downloading stores from iTunes, RealRhapsody, and Napster have overtaken free peer to peer file swapping in popularity. There are ways to get music that are less expensive than buying CDs and are still legal. These options are definitely worth consideration. Not only will you enjoy music files free from legal issues, they are better for your computer too, as they are free of spyware.
