Meeting icebreakers set the pace for effective business communication

It can be an alienating situation to go into a business meeting and not know any of the other participants. Getting comfortable with the other members of the meeting can mean a better experience, as it helps conversation and ideas to flow more naturally. Meeting icebreakers are a good way to get off on the right foot and establish an environment of good rapport.

In a face-to-face meeting, a meeting icebreaker might be a quick get-to-know-you game, a team building activity, or a simple lead-in. The type of icebreaker you select depends on the meeting. An event that will take all day or the weekend will require a more elaborate warm-up, given the amount of time you'll be spending together. For a brief meeting, a very short game that allows for introductions will suffice.

The online meeting setting requires a different sort of icebreaker activity. When you aren't interacting in person with someone, taking time to do an elaborate warm-up may be counter-productive. A simple lead-in works best in these situations. Meeting Wizard defines a lead-in as a quick, topic-related statement or question. One of their examples is everyone sharing one question they would like the meeting to answer.

Implementing icebreakers can make your group a group of people who both work and have fun together. Business Training Works has a variety of free icebreakers for you to peruse, of differing degrees of time commitment. Even a brief introduction exercise or the simplest of lead-ins can help to establish a more communicative environment for your next meeting.
