Good business meeting etiquette makes an impression

Proper etiquette can play a fairly significant role in whether a meeting is a productive gathering or an inefficient use of time. Starting the meeting off on the right foot when it comes to manners ensures participants that both they and their time are valid. Good business meeting etiquette should be a priority for anyone who hosts or attends such functions to ensure successful and effective meetings.

Whether you are the meeting facilitator or a participant, arriving a couple minutes early is very important. It allows the meeting to start at the actual slated start time, which helps make sure it does not run over the allotted time. Informing participants of the purpose and subjects to be discussed during business meetings is also considered proper etiquette, so they have time to prepare.

The cell phone should always be off when entering the conference room, or left in the office. If you're running the meeting, it's good etiquette to address everyone as equally important despite varying ranks in the business. As a meeting participant, though, it's protocol to address the chair or senior member in charge when making comments -- which should never be made at the expense of someone else speaking.

The Society for Technical Communication has eleven "commandments" for good face-to-face meeting etiquette, which differs slightly from online meeting etiquette. These are basic but important elements to remember when in a conference, like paying attention so the same question isn't asked twice.

A meeting facilitator shows both good manners and good business sense by following these guidelines, thanking your participants for their time and always sending follow-ups with the minutes of the meeting. Proper etiquette on one end can help ensure the favor is returned.
