How to create a Flash presentation from PowerPoint using available conversion tools
September 26, 2005
By: Alice Osborn
The conversion of a PowerPoint presentation into a Flash
presentation is necessary if the presenter wants to give the
presentation greater accessibility, compatibility, and ease
of use.
A PowerPoint to Flash conversion can be accomplished with
a conversion software tool, such as the sophisticated
Articulate Presenter or the free
Powerbullet Presenter, that convert the PowerPoint
presentation into web-compatible Flash files that can be
downloaded a lot faster than the PowerPoint files. With
Flash, designers and presenters have greater control over
their work and the files compress to a small size while
retaining their quality.
Online collaboration guru, Robin Good, has compiled a
comprehensive "Top 20+" list that includes Articulate
Presenter, as well as other
PowerPoint to Flash conversion tools to help presenters
wanting to expand their presentations' potential.
Advantages for converting a PowerPoint presentation
into Flash
- Greater accessibility for remote users because now the
presentation can be seen on any browser since greater than
98% of all browsers already have a Flash player built in.
Flash player is automatically installed on all Windows 98
or greater-based computers and Macs.
- Greater compatibility because the presentation can be
expanded from PC users to users on Macs, on Linux,
Solaris, HP, and SGI workstations, and on various hand
held devices.
- Now the files aren't so large since the Flash
conversion reduces the file size up to 1/10th of the
original. Sound is also integrated.
- Flash files can be played at most resolutions and
screen sizes, giving greater ease of use. The file also
incorporates streaming technology, which lets viewers
immediately see the presentation, and not wait for an
extended download.
What do we use to convert the Flash files?
There are several conversion tools on the market that
transform PowerPoint files into Flash files. Some are
top-of-the-line, like Articulate Presenter, while others are
freeware (Powerbullet Presenter) that may not convert some
animation files.
- Articulate Presenter -- Robin Good calls this
Flash software application the "Ferrari" of the Flash
conversion software tools. This solution is a plug-in to
PowerPoint and adds a new pull-down menu to the
application -- so that when the presenter has finished the
PowerPoint slides, they would use this solution within
PowerPoint to add narration, animation, and special
effects. Then, the solution would convert the PowerPoint
slides into a Flash format that can be published to a Web
server, CD-ROM, or Learning Management Systems (LMS),
distributed using FTP, Zip or e-mail, and then played via
the Flash plug-in device found on most computers. This
rich-media conversion tool is "highly customizable"
according to Good and also supports interactive quizzes
and e-learning. Its price runs from $500 to $1000
depending upon the version.
- Powerbullet -- This free software conversion
tool is aimed at a more general population that would not
be necessarily computer-savvy. With not a lot of start-up
time, this tool can create multi-page animated
presentations and a self-running show. To obtain more
advanced features, users have an opportunity to upgrade
this freeware for $19.95.
Presenters need to give themselves an opportunity to
convert PowerPoint files to Flash files if they are giving
an online presentation. The extra steps are worth the
heightened presentation quality and compatibility, and with
Flash, their audience will probably take more away from the
presentation since the animation, streaming and audio will
look and sound more professional.
