Microsoft is coming out with a new collaboration tool to replace their Microsoft Net Meeting software
September 29, 2006

Microsoft Net Meeting is a VoIP and videoconferencing
tool available to all Windows users that helps facilitate
multi-point video conferences over the Internet. Microsoft
Net Meeting software comes with several features that
greatly enhance your online meeting capabilities. These
include remote desktop sharing, program sharing, file
transferring, text chatting, white boarding, as well as
advanced directory and calling features.
With relatively minimal system requirements, Net Meeting
is a good starting point for those interested in conducting
online video conferences. Net Meeting however has lost a lot
of their user base since Microsoft came out with
Windows Live Messenger, which came standard on all of
their
XP operating systems. Therefore, in the interest of
staying competitive, Microsoft has opted to phase out Net
Meeting in favor of a more sophisticated version called
Windows Meeting Space.
With the late 2006 scheduled release of Microsoft's new
operating system,
Windows Vista, Meeting Space will officially take the
place of Net Meeting. Meeting Space is a collaboration tool
that allows anywhere between 2-10 users to participate
together in a meeting session.
Meeting Space is based on the peer-to-peer concept of
networking which allows collaboration among users by
directly utilizing the bandwidth generated by the user
network itself rather than relying on the client server
networking method. One unique aspect about Meeting Space is
that it will automatically set up a wireless network if it
cannot gain access to an existing local area network. This
capability makes this an ideal tool for intra-office
collaboration.
If you have Meeting Space installed on your PC, you can
start your own online session, join an existing session, or
invite someone to join your session already in progress.
When a Meeting Space session is initiated, a presentation
area is displayed. A listing of other Meeting Space users
near by automatically appears to facilitate online
collaboration. If you choose to share applications during
your meeting, selected participants can see what you are
working on and have access to review and edit the shared
files. This is ideal for sharing files and tasks among
office workgroups.
If you are a fan of Net Meeting, be on the lookout for
Microsoft's new and enhanced collaboration software. From
the sounds of it, Meeting Space should prove to be an
invaluable tool as well.
